Trail Projects Await Promised Dollars

Each year, hundreds of thousands of hikers venture onto backcountry trails in Washington state that are maintained with funds from a little known federal program called the National Recreation Trails Program (NRTP).

Our trail maintenance program is dependent on these funds, and right now the spigot of the NRTP cash flow has dried up due to an unexplained holdup at the Department of Transportation, as well as a change in Congressional funding.

Where to Go Now

West Tiger Bird

West Tiger

The West Tiger Mountain trails are some of the best places to hike this time of year. Choose the route described in our Hiking Guide or consult your map and make your own adventure. Note that there can be snow on the trail, especially at the summits, so be prepared or stay at low elevations.

Rainy Maple Leaf

Rainy Day Hikes

If you'd rather not head for the snow, try one of our Rainy Day Hikes. These are usually snow-free hikes that are as enjoyable on a rainy day as they are are on a sunny one. From the North Cascades to the Columbia Gorge, there is a hike for you.

Need further inspiration? Check out where fellow hikers are going in WTA's Trip Reports.
