Backcountry Trail Crew Leader

The Backcountry Trail Crew Leader is a full-time seasonal field-based position based out of Seattle with work sites located in various regions of Washington State. The position is responsible for facilitating all aspects of the Volunteer Vacation program, including leading week-long backcountry work parties, facilitating trail projects to completion and reporting on the work.

Position description

The Backcountry Trail Crew Leader is a full-time seasonal field-based position based out of Seattle with work sites located in various regions of Washington State. The position is responsible for facilitating all aspects of the Volunteer Vacation program. The position reports directly to WTA’s Project Coordinator.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Prepare for and lead Volunteer Vacations

  • Leads week-long backcountry work parties;
  • Safely motivate and lead a crew of ten volunteers of diverse ages and backgrounds;
  • Supervise volunteers at camp;
  • Work directly with Intern/Assistant Crew Lead;
  • Ability to remain calm and manage emergency situations.

 

Ensure technical aspects of work is to standards

  • Coordinate project and plans with WTA Project Coordinator and land manager;
  • Facilitate various trail projects to completion including drainage structures, annual maintenance, and construction of steps, turnpike and puncheon.

 

Work Party documentation

  • Maintain and submit sign-in and liability releases for volunteers;
  • Ensures safety talk is complete and documented;
  • Prepare summary report upon completion of work party.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in an outdoor setting;
  • Ability to work independently and also contribute to a team effort;
  • Skills in trail maintenance and trail construction;
  • Must be comfortable camping and living in an backcountry environment;
  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to insure a fun, safe, and quality volunteer experience;
  • Must be available from the end of May through the end of August;
  • WFA or WFR certification;
  • Reliable vehicle (WTA provides mileage reimbursement at current IRS rate).

Schedule and Compensation

The work weeks run from Saturday morning to the following Saturday afternoon, with the next 6 days off. Crew leaders will camp the work week. Compensation is $1,353.60 per trip, plus food.
