Seasonal Trail Maintenance Program Intern

This internship is a full-time field-based seasonal position with work sites location in various regions of Washington State. The intern will work as an assistant crew leader on trail and help manage camp for WTA’s Volunteer Vacation program. The intern works directly with the Chief Crew Leader and reports directly to WTA’s Project Coordinator.

Position description

This internship is a full-time field-based seasonal position with work sites location in various regions of Washington State. The intern will work as an assistant crew leader on trail and help manage camp for WTA’s Volunteer Vacation program. The intern works directly with the Chief Crew Leader and reports directly to WTA’s Project Coordinator. Position is based out of Seattle.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Safely motivate and lead a crew of ten volunteers of diverse backgrounds and ages;
  • Work directly with Chief Crew Leader;
  • Supervise volunteers at camp;
  • Assist with set up and break down of camp;
  • Engage volunteers in all aspects of camp life;
  • Provide support to crew leader on trail projects;
  • Communicate with youth volunteers and parents;
  • Remain calm and manage emergency situations.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience working in outdoor setting;
  • Have ability to work independently and also contribute to a team effort;
  • Skills in trail maintenance and building preferred, but not necessary;
  • Must be comfortable camping and living in a backcountry environment;
  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to insure a fun, safe, and quality volunteer experience;
  • Must be available from the end of May through the end of August;
  • WFA or WFR certification;
  • Valid driver’s license;
  • Reliable vehicle (WTA provides mileage reimbursement at current IRS rate).


Schedule and Compensation

The work weeks run from Saturday morning to the following Saturday afternoon. The intern will camp during the week. Stipend of $300 per week, plus all meals provided.
