Youth Program Intern

Seasonal trail maintenance employment with Washington Trails Association.

Position description

The Trail Maintenance Youth Program intern is a full-time field-based position located at various Washington State Parks. The intern will work as an assistant crew leader on trail and help manage camp for Washington Trails Association’s summer youth program. The intern works directly with the Youth Program Crew Leader and reports directly to WTA’s Youth Programs Coordinator.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Safely motivate and lead a crew of ten 14-18 year old volunteers of diverse backgrounds
  • Work directly with youth program crew Leader
  • Supervise volunteers at camp
  • Assist with set up and break down of camp
  • Engage youth volunteers in all aspects of camp life
  • Provide support to crew leader on trail projects
  • Communicate with youth volunteers and parents
  • Remain calm and manage emergency situations  


Desired qualifications

  • Experience working with youth in outdoor setting
  • Have ability to work independently, but also contribute to a team effort
  • Skills in trail maintenance and building preferred, but not necessary
  • Must be comfortable camping and living in an outdoor environment
  • Must have interpersonal skills sufficient to insure a fun, safe, and quality volunteer experience
  • Must be available from the end of May through the end of August
  • WFA or WFR certification
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Reliable vehicle (WTA provides mileage reimbursement)


Schedule
The work weeks run from Sunday afternoon to Friday afternoon, with Saturdays off (the full schedule is at www.wta.org under “Volunteer Vacations for Youth”). The intern will camp during the work week. 

Stipend
$300/week
