What you can do to help hikers and trails.

Here is where you will find all the information you need to become a powerful trail advocate!

Washington Trails Association works with decisionmakers to advance the interests of hikers when such issues are being decided - but we can’t do it alone.  Decisionmakers also need to hear directly from hikers.  Your elected officials need to know that their constituents care about preservation of wild lands, access to trails and adequate funding for general and emergency maintenance.

So make your voice heard and speak out for hikers today!

Lobby Day
Hikers converged on Olympia to talk trail funding and budget increases for DNR for WTA's first Hiker Lobby Day in 2006.

Join Trail Action Network

Washington Trails Association’s electronic advocacy community lets you  keep up-to-date on policies that impact the trails we love and provides a quick and easy way for you to make your voice heard on these issues.  If you would like to become a trail advocate click here.

Volunteer

Educating the public about WTA and the policy work we do to protect trails is a great way for hikers to learn more about policy and meet some great people. Whether it is phonebanking on an issue that needs immediate action or tabling at an event where you can introduce people to WTA and current issues affecting hikers there is always work to be done and a good time to be had. If you are interested in volunteering for phonebanking or an outreach tabling event contact Kindra at kindra@wta.org.

Attend a Public Meeting

Often the decision-making process will include opportunities for public comment by holding meetings or town hall forums.  Participating in these events is a great way to make sure that hikers’ interests are represented.  Check out upcoming events and meetings to find out what is happening near you.

Host an Advocacy Potluck

Opening your home up to Washington Trails Association for an evening of policy and land use discussion with local land managers and WTA members is a great way to learn more about what is happening near you and meet other hikers in your community (not to mention the great food that our members always bring!).  If you are interesting in hosting a potluck in your area, contact Kindra at kindra@wta.org.

Be Creative!

Do you have another idea about how you could be a trail advocate?  Contact WTA’s advocacy staff at trailaction@wta.org to see how we can help make your advocacy ideas come to life.
