Mark & Phil

Mark & Phil are brothers who live a couple of miles apart in Seattle and work a couple of miles apart in Bellevue for different wireless carriers. They've been skiing, hiking, and climbing together since Boy Scouts in the 1960's. A partial list of significant peaks they've summited: Mount Rainier (twice), Glacier Peak, Mount Adams, Mount Hood (in December!), Mount Stuart, Eldorado Peak, Mount Maude, Sloan Peak, Mount Angeles, Cathedral Rock, Mount Daniel, Dome Peak, Mount Shuksan, Seven Fingered Jack, Bonanza Peak, and Mount Olympus. Mark and Phil have perfected what they call the "Crash-and-Dash" method: Driving to the trailhead the evening before the hike, bivouacing near the trailhead, then hitting the trail before dawn using headlamps. This works well for long day hikes like Mount David and Mount Jupiter. This method allows most of the ascent before the heat of the day, and helps prevent having to stumble out in the dark. They also enjoy day hikes to smaller summits, and in a typical season they climb about a dozen peaks in the Cascades, Olympics, and Mount Rainier Park. They seem to gravitate toward the peaks in the Lake Wenatchee area for beautiful scenery, easy access, and rain-shadow weather. They enjoy trail maintenance on WTA work parties, especially clearing fallen logs with a 7-foot 2-man bucksaw. There are unconfirmed rumors that Mark and Phil carry gloves and pruning saws when they hike, to do "informal" trail clearing work. They also are intermediate-advanced skiers, Phil having elegant smooth style, Mark skiing backwards and bombing off jumps with short skis. They take a destination ski trip each winter. Mark has been quoted as saying, "I could live in Washington all my life and never begin to explore it all."
