Copper Creek Hut

The calendar may say spring, but you shouldn't miss an opportunity to take a last snowshoe or cross-country ski in the white stuff this season! The Copper Creek Hut is the jewel in the Mt. Tahoma Trail system, and there is still great snow for the altitude-starved outdoors-person.

The calendar may say spring, but you shouldn't miss an opportunity to take a last romp in the white stuff this season! The Copper Creek Hut is the jewel in the Mt. Tahoma Trail system, and there is still great snow for the altitude-starved outdoors-person.

In fact, there is so much snow that the road is still plowed only to the lower Sno-Park lot. This is primarily a destination for skiers - the Mt. Tahoma Trails Association (MTTA) does a fine job grooming - but snowshoes are allowed. Just stay clear of the groomed tracks and to the side of the trail. Less experienced cross-country skiers may be a bit out of control on their descent!

The trails are quite well-marked - follow the signs for Copper Creek Hut. The first mile is quite steep, but the grade becomes more gradual thereafter as it follows the ridgeline to the hut.

One perk of skiing or snowshoeing to Copper Creek Hut - going inside and getting warm! Photo by Trip Report poster 'Wild Celtic Rose.'

It's well worth the effort, especially on a clear day. As you approach the hut, you will be wowed by views to Mt. St. Helens, the Sawtooth Range and Mt. Rainier. Once you reach the hut, you're welcome to go inside and warm up. The MTTA takes reservations for overnight visitors but is open during the day.

Take time to play around in the snow near the hut, then return as you came.

Directions:

Historically, there have been two ways to access the Copper Creek Hut. Unfortunately, a bridge wash-out makes the route from the south unreachable. From the town of Elbe, drive Highway 706 east about 6.5 miles and take a left on a road signed "92 Road." The map shows the road is actually 8 Road, which winds its way from there onto 9 Road and ultimately the 92 Road Sno-Park. A Sno-Park pass is required.
