Overnight along Russell Ridge, starting out at the Andy Creek trailhead by Rimrock Lake. Beautiful views of Mt. Adams, the Goat Rocks, and Mt. Rainier - plus watched several herds of elk, and nearly ran into some goats.
No snow along the sunny side of Russell Ridge, but we lost the trail along the ridge itself just after Bootjack Rock (we found it again and had a nice, flat camp spot - surrounded by 9' of snow). Met some Forest Service folks who mentioned lots of snow at Fox Meadow. We also met someone who had managed a dayhike to McNeil Peak, but it didn't sound like easy going. Some water early in the trail, but mostly just snowmelt along the ridge. No mosquitoes (...but a few ticks). Overnight

We hiked the two miles up Andy Creek trail in some pretty warm weather. Shade was very welcome. Lower down, strawberry plants were in full bloom. Once we reached the intersection with the Russell Ridge trail, there was snow in the trees especially as we climbed up to 6,000 feet.
Camped on the bench just east of Bootjack rock. Views to the South, Mt. Adams and the Goat Rocks were stunning up the North Fork Tieton drainage. Larkspur, phlox, yellow bells, spring beauties and fawn lillies were blooming profusely. 20 mountain goats including 5 kids and 10 elk visited the south facing meadows. Nice trip, a few blow downs to navigate around.

Walked Andy Creek, to Russell Ridge Trail and the Ironstone Trail to McNeil Peak-a little over 10 miles round trip. Saw a herd of cow elk and newborns in the meadows from which Muddy Creek flows, later watched two branch antlered bulls graze a hillside for 40 minutes. Also saw a big buck and a little buck, marmots, a coyote, and a plethora of smaller wildlife. Andy Creek Trail has been maintained, when the Ironstone Trail turns northerly, there's a lot of snow in places-but is melting fast given the warm weather of the past week. Excellent views of Goat Rocks, Mt. Adams, Mt. Rainier, the Tumac Plateau and some of the mountains in the Rattlesnake Creek drainage-wished I'd brought my overnight gear.

The Andy Creek trail is a multiple abuse trail but it is rarely visited on weekdays. It climbs two miles to Russell Ridge, offering nice views & lots of elk. The distance on the Russell Ridge trail is very short as the Iron Mountain trail takes over for the trip along Russell Ridge toward McNeil Peak. There was no snow on the Andy Creek trail & some patches along the Iron Mountain trail until the base of McNeil Peak. The trail becomes difficult to follow as it parallels the ridge that runs to McNeil Peak & as it switchbacks up toward McNeil Peak. There are a few trees down on the trail but all are easy to get around. Lots of Mountain Goat sign along Russell Ridge, but I didn't see any. |
