Trail starts just past the Salmon Meadows campground, right after the cattle gate. The green trails map for the start is a bit confusing, but stay to the right at the intersections and you will be on the right path. And yes, the trail does go up, then down, then up again.

Look out for cows. Some *%#@!! rancher has the rights to graze his cows in the area and I ran across them right on the trail. They had churned up several sections into a mudhole and had crapped everywhere. Fortunately they ran away when they saw me, but they ran the path of least resistance: up the trail. Eventually they took off the trail. Needless to say, the cows have damaged the streambed and trail in many places. Trail follows a small creek up a narrow valley then switchbacks 3 or 4 times up the head of the valley, coming out into Angel pass, really just a notch in a ridge. On your right are aspens and rocks, on your left is a rock field and rock cliffs above that. A cool place to sit and soak up the silence.

Earlier on the trail, if you keep an eye out, you may see a wood sign on the right which says ""Cougar Mt/Cowman's Cabin"" and points straight up the hillside. I couldn't find any trail on the hillside so just ignored it.

Once at Angel pass it is easy to get up to the top of Cougar Mt., which has more cows and great views east and south and west. From Angel Pass, continue on the trail, through a wood gate and some forest, out onto a logging road. Follow the logging road to your right into a clearcut and then follow a track that skirts the clearcut on the right and goes up the hill. At the top of the hill you will see a wire gate. Open this and you are now in a meadow, with views to the west. Continue to your left, uphill through the meadow to the top of Cougar Mt. Great views and what looks like a small burn on the east side of the wire fence.
