Annette Lake

Dense forest drapes the lower trail, keeping hikers cool on the hottest August afternoons. At trail's end, a deep lake waits to kill off the last of the summer heat--for those brave enough to dive into its icy waters. Between the thick second-growth forest stands and the high alpine lake, the trail rolls along Humpback Creek, offering tantalizing views now and again of pretty waterfalls along the tumbling creek. The hike was 1 hour and a half to the Annette Lake very easy and without too much sun exposure. Once I arrived to the lake there were a lot of bugs so I will advise to get some protection otherwise you will have to always move around. The water was warm in the afternoon but the first 50 feet with the shallow water were hard to walk with the bare foots because of sharp stones and slick woods.

We hit the trail at 8:00am. There were a few cars in the parking lot but we were the only ones on the trail. Nice hike, steady elevation to the top (nice workout). Lake was lovely. We forgot the insect repellent in the car and I was eaten alive at the lake - so remember your bug spray!
On the way down the trail was packed with hikers coming in. I recommend hitting the trail no later than 8:30 on a Saturday morning if you want to enjoy the hike and the lake in peace. Trail conditions were great. We did the side 3/4 mile walk on the nature trail on our way out. It was a nice little side trek. Probably great for those with small kids. There is an outhouse at the trailhead and the parking lot is large and can easily accomodate many cars. All in all a nice morning hike.

Arrived at the trailhead a little before 7:00 am. No one else on the trail all the way to the lake. Arrived at the lake at 8:30. Earthcorps group doing maintenance once I arrived at the lake. Took a quick dip, waited for the sun to come out. Mosquitos present, but not overwhelming. Headed back down the trail after about a half hour, counted 14 people on the way up. Arrived at the trailhead 10:35.

Off exit 47 of I-90, this is probably the most accessable of the Alpine Lake hikes. The trail is free of snow until you are within 50 feet of the lake, but poses no obstacles. The lake itself is snow free as are all the campsites. We stayed over night and had the lake to ourselves. Leaving Seattle at 3:30pm and having your camp set up 7pm on the shores of a gorgeous alpine lake, you can’t beat that!
