Dense forest drapes the lower trail, keeping hikers cool on the hottest August afternoons. At trail's end, a deep lake waits to kill off the last of the summer heat--for those brave enough to dive into its icy waters. Between the thick second-growth forest stands and the high alpine lake, the trail rolls along Humpback Creek, offering tantalizing views now and again of pretty waterfalls along the tumbling creek.

The trail begins alongside the Asahel Curtis Nature Trail but continues to climb to the right when the gentle Asahel Curtis Loop goes left. You'll follow an ancient old logging road (mostly reclaimed by the fertile forest).

At about 1 mile out, you'll pass under a high-tension powerline and 0.25 mile later will cross the wide track of the Iron Horse Trail (the old railroad right-of-way). From this point, the trail gets serious. Serious about scenery, and serious about climbing.

The path switchbacks up the Humpback Creek valley for more than 1.5 miles until the last steep pitch puts you at about 3600 feet elevation. For the next mile, you'll traverse the slope above Humpback Creek, with occasional views across the valley to Humpback Mountain. The trail ends at the shores of Annette Lake, which lies in the cirque between Humpback Mountain, Abiel Peak, and Silver Peak.
Driving Directions:

From Seattle drive east on I-90 to exit 47 (Asahel Curtis/Denny Creek). Turn right from the off-ramp and continue 0.25 mile, then turn left on Forest Road 5590. You'll find the parking area in 0.3 mile.

We hit the trail head at 9:30am and it was a little foggy but NO Rain ! It turned out to be a beautiful day after all. There was a little mud and water on the trail but not bad after all of the rain we have had recently. It was a great hike in the forest this time of year. We arrived at the lake and the Sun was out and so we found a spot on the Northside of the lake in the sun and had a snack. We didn't see anyone on the trail or at the lake and had the place to ourselves. Got to love hiking during the week. We stayed for about an 1-1/2 and headed back. We finally ran into 2 people on the way out. The fog had lifted while at the lake and so now we could see the valley walls on the hike out. We found a spot through the trees and saw Granite Mtn just coming out of the fog. Another great day and hike in the NW.

Nice day for a hike. We chose this hike because we felt with the recent warm weather there would be good access to this lake. We were not disappointed. RT to the lake is about 7 miles and 1800 verticle and the trail is overall in great shape, however water proof shoes are advised. Fall colors are still evident but fading.

Hit the trail early around 6:30am. The temperature at about the 3100 foot elevation dropped noticably. Did not experience any issues and condition of the trail was good. Lake water level is about what you'd expect for this time of year and having not had much rain the past month. You can navigate around the lake easily. Campfires prohibited. fall colors with the vine maples is terrific. Saw about a dozen people heading up on my way down, back to the car by 10:30am.

A beautiful day for a decent hike! The trail was pretty clear and dry with few friendly hikers. Parking was easy too!

Calm and beautiful, the water was pretty cold but good for a dip, which a friend did take.
