Thought we'd go to Lake Wenatchee to escape the incoming rain, but it was raining at the TH when we started. Cady Creek is quite brushy at times. Not hard to walk but will soak you through on a day like today. Thinking the clouds would lift as the day went on we pushed on up to 5,200 feet stopping for lunch in steady rain, sitting at the top of a meadow, looking out where there would have been views had the weather been clear. The one other hiker we saw, a through-hiker on his way to Canada, shared the humor in our situation and said he was impressed to see us out hiking in this weather, but I think we were more impressed by his super positive attitude. He was also soaked and heading even higher into the clouds. We decided to attempt the loop out Cady Ridge in future in better weather and with more daylight. Still, we enjoyed the beautiful forest hike despite the rain. I'd give the fall colors another couple of weeks to develop.

Our original ambitions took us up Cady ridge and after a few days we'd come out Poet's Ridge on the faded trail #1544. Cady Ridge did not disappoint. Steep and dry at first but eventually rewarding us with sweeping views and meadows of wildflowers.

We eventually caught the PCT just as the mists started to turn to rain. Our plan was to head north to Dishpan Gap and camp with Glacier Peak at our doorstep. We found the site we wanted but Glacier was already gone and the rain was getting heavy. We settled in, played Scrabble and drank our two night's supply of wine.

The next more we awoke in a cloud and decided to bail. The likelihood of the weather breaking was slim so we packed up wet and headed out. Poet's Ridge would be brushy, wet and difficult. It would have to wait for another day. We headed south on the PCT for 5 miles to Cady Pass and the Cady Creek Trail. The PCT is simply fantastic: old growth, gentle grading of the trail, wild flower meadows and despite the clouds, views.

The Cady Creek Trail is well maintained. Brushy and wet at times but otherwise without problems. Wildflower meadows are just now coming into their peak season.

Started at Cady creek trail off FR6500,it was very overgrown! Brush up to my chest on and off for about 3 miles until you hit a few campsites by the creek. Progress up to the PCT junction. We took the PCT and camped at LK. Sally Ann. It's a popular place. Windy and cold, but beautiful. This section of the PCT was not too difficult and had splendid views with lots of berries. WE then went down Cady ridge. The first few miles of Cady ridge are wonderful. Flat with lots of meadow and views to both sides. The descent is very, very steep. I'm glad we went down this way and not up!

Our group meet at the trailhead Friday night to carcamp for an early morning start to our loop backpack trip (hike 62 in 100 Hikes in Washington's Glacier Peak Region). The maps indicate that the trailhead at Little Wenatchee Ford is also a campground, and one website I found even indicated that there were three campsites and a vault toilet. However, there was no sign of either campsites or a toilet at the trailhead, and we found the parking to be very limited. Fortunately, we found an area near the trailhead where people had obviously camped before, and we were able to pitch our tents.

On Saturday we hiked the Cady Creek Trail (no. 1501) to Cady Pass, then took the PCT north as far as Lake Sally Ann and set up our tents. We were the second group to arrive at the lake; by nightfall nearly all of the campsites were taken at this popular lake. After a snack, two of us decided to take a side trip out to Blue Lake. As we hiked the clouds moved in and it became increasing chilly. Unfortunately, the clouds obscured the views of the surrounding mountains, but the wildflowers are great right now. We went out to Blue Lake via the steep and rocky trail 652.1. We opted for the longer route back to camp via trail 652 and 650. Blue Lake was very pretty and would be a great camping spot for backpackers on busy weekends; we only saw one group there.

On Sunday we continued out the PCT to the Little Wenatchee River trail no. 1525. The fog was dense all morning and didn't clear until we were well down into the valley, and then the flies came out in droves. This trail is beautiful, but is quite overgrown in some spots.

I calculated the complete mileage, including the side trip to Blue Lake, at 28.1 miles (based off the mileage on the Green Trails map no. 144 - Benchmark Mtn.)

Fabulously beautiful day for long views, flowers and a great 8 hour hike.
We chose this 16 mile loop over the meander meadow-pct-cady ridge loop on the recommendation of Dan Nelson's Loop Hikes book, as the preferred loop due to the heavy growth along the Little Wenatchee River trail. The Cady Creek trail seems lightly used but is a nice stretch of comfortable forest walking, never very steep and it brings you up to the intersection w/ the PCT, and great peek-a-boo views in no time.

Hard to hike the next 6 miles quickly as we repeatedly wanted to stop to admire the breathtaking views, from the Wenatchee ridge, to Stuart, Rainier and of course, Glacier Peak.

Lake Sally Ann is still largely frozen, but there are 6 or more campsites on dry ground. Only one lonely tent when we walked by.
Otherwise only a few patches of snow.

Bugs a little pesky but not terrible.

and hardy anyone on the trail...

Also, fyi, on FS road 65, just after pavement gives way to gravel, a large tree partially blocks the road. Most cars should be able to squeeze by, as we did, and so did a trailer full of horses, probably with someone directing from the front. Might be a little spooky without some guidance.

Highly recommend as a Great one day loop hike! ENJOY!
