I led my first Saturday Snowshoe of the season for the Cascadians today. My party of 7 snowshoed up Hwy 410 towards Chinook Pass from the gate at Morse Creek. The snow was well consolidated with a little crust, not bad for snowshoeing, though I don't think I would have liked to ski it. It was partly cloudy when we started, but after a couple of hours it cleared off. About a mile or so short of the pass Dennis, Brian, & I wimped out and stopped for lunch while the others kept going. They finally made it to the pass and over to where they could see Rainier, but it turned out to be quite a bit farther than they expected. It clouded up about 45 min after Dennis, Brian, & I stopped and then began to get cold, so we finally packed up and headed down as the clouds thickened. This is a good time of year to do this trip as there are no big avalanches across to highway, though the others reported a couple of small ones farther up. The views of the peaks around Chinook Pass were very nice, especially when it was sunny, and wherever there was water coming down the hillside there were lots of nice icicles.
