Sunny but breezy day in Cougar Mountain. Barely saw anyone else on the trails we went on. We started at Sky Country trail head which is a lot less busy then Red Town. Took Old Man to By Pass to cross the Clay Pit Road and up Klondike. In quite a few spots very muddy. Took lots of leaps and bounds to avoid slogging through it. At Million Dollar Viewpoint we had a pretty nice view although if those clouds were completely gone I'm sure it would've been better with mountains! Took Anti Aircraft Ridge back down to Clay Pit Road and back over to Sky Country to end our hike. Nice route!

Bring your boots - there's still small amounts of snow that is starting to melt, causing very, very muddy paths. The area around Million Dollar View was good, but all trails leading up to it were very muddy, though the entrance wasn't too bad.

A short Monday hike with the Issaquah Alps club which wandered over parts of trails I had taken a week earlier. Trail conditions were a bit drier and less muddy.
There are still spots which are quite muddy, particularly on the Klondike Swamp and Coyote trails where recent horse activity has chewed up some places. The day was cool, most people started out with gloves, but no rain for our walk. A good stretch of the legs and fun company.

This was a three mile loop of 500 feet elevation gain (approximate) over trails from the Sky Country Trail Head. The day was sunny if a bit chilly. The walk in the woods was peace filled and the trails were largely in good condition (not much mud).
Sky Country had a large number of vehicles in the lot but except at the end, of my walk, I did not encounter much in the way of people or horses. The Nike Trail did show evidence of horse hooves and droppings but the trail was not muddy. The trails once off the Nike Horse Trail were dry and non-muddy. Cave Hole is rocky in places but not slick and the By-Pass Trail was in excellent shape. Clay Pit Road to the Tibbett's Marsh Trail was the only real hill on the walk and quite dry with no road traffic. Once to Tibbett's Marsh mud appeared and was fairly constant to Cougar Pass (junction with AA Ridge Trail). The rest of the hike was dry. I met a couple of hikes with a young dog on the Klondike Swamp Trail and then three horse persons a bit further along the trail. Dog was a bit jumpy which I advised the horse riders about. Walk took about one hour and was an enjoyable break from the city. Day hike

Hiked a loop around Anti-Aircraft Peak on a cold Sunday morning. Parked at the Anti-Aircraft Peak trailhead and took Shangri La to West Tibbets Creek with a side trip to the Fantastic Erratic. Then Cougar Pass to Klondike Swamp stopping at the clay pit and the abandoned mine shaft off the clay pit road. Ended up by looping back along Lost Beagle back to the parking lot. Print yourself a map off the King County trails website before you go.
It was pretty cold - only 25 at the trailhead - but that came with one great advantage, all the mud was frozen! A couple inches of snow at the top. Not many animals out, a few Chickadees and Towhees and one big woodpecker looking for breakfast in the Alder snags. Only a half dozen or so other folks out the whole time I was there - you could hear them coming, >crunch, cruch< through the frozen mud and the >tink, tink, tink< of their walking poles. While nothing like Pilchuck or even DeLeo Wall on the other side of the park, there is a pretty good view north over Lake Sammamish on a little side trail from the parking lot. The best view on this loop is back east from the entrance to the clay pit. |
