Ralph and I departed from the Pratt Lake trailhead at 0815 and went up trail #1007 reaching a snow-covered trail at 3200'. It got deeper as we gained elevation, especially in the open areas. We finally stopped at 4300' (on trail #1009) since the snow was up to our knees and we did not bring snowshoes.
We traveled about 8 miles total in 6.5 hours. It was warming up so the trees were releasing their captured snow and dripping considerably. While we didn't make our objective, we got some good exercise and realized that next time out we would take the snowshoes. http://www.flickr.com/[…]/

Visited Pratt Lake via the Pratt Lake/Granite Mtn trailhead. On the way out from Pratt Lake, took the junction down to Island Lake. Snow, blowdowns, and water are present on the trail in spots, but overall are negligible. Have fun, this is a beautiful area.

Our group of 6 had planned to hike Eagle Peak Saddle but with the temporary Park closure at Nisqually entrance, we headed for Island and Rainbow Lakes, from Pratt/Granite trailhead, I 90 exit 47.
There were about 100 good-natured soldiers milling around the trailhead, getting ready for their share of exercise. We waved as we heard them say “You guys do this for FUN” !! Initially a bit windy with nippy temps, we soon warmed up. There are a number of stream crossings, however mind when crossing the fast creek a little east of pratt/granite junction (see pic) The trail currently has an extraordinary volume of water spilling down in numerous spots; we all used heel power to help divert a few bad spots and to clear debris from established channels. We encountered snow around 3800 feet, 1 1/2 inches tops, and instep crampons and yaks were very handy for slick icy spots on trail down to Island Lake and a few of the old puncheons. Rainbow Lake is already partially frozen. Keep eye on turnaround time, dusk comes pretty fast these days; all in all, a most enjoyable and interesting hike. Stats: around 3200 gain , 11 plus miles. The Talapus, Ollalie, Island Lake route is a good, moderate workout for a hot day. The abandoned road from the Talapus trailhead has been regraded and is very nice. The 2.5 miles to Talapus lake run through cool forest and up gentle switchbacks to the various bridges over the spillways. A few more switchbacks from the lake bring you to a signed junction with the Pratt Lake connector. This takes you to the easy going Pratt Lake trail up to Ollalie Saddle. Just beyond this is a lovely picnic spot through moss draped trees to a rock tumble in the open breeze.
The trail beyond this point is a bit narrower and more open to the sun as it curves around Mt. Pratt and descends into Bandera's Backyard. Here are Island, Rainbow, Frog, and Mason Lakes. We got some huckleberries and blueberries here but most were gone. |
