Snow pretty much solid right form the parking lot. The trail is packed and easy to follow all the way to the summit of Pratt as well as Talapus Lake. Great hike. Although this hike is relatively free from avalanche danger one still needs to exercise caution.

7 hours car to car.

Arrived at Pratt Lake trail head ~7:40AM. There were already 5-6 other cars, some were doing Granite, some doing West Granite. Trail was easy to follow. Icy condition was not a problem until passing the Talapus Lake intersection - A very thin layer of new powder over ice made the going hard, but ice ax was not needed until about 1/2 mile from Pratt summit. After the Pratt Lake sign, we didn't follow the summer tail to Island Lake but chose to stay on the ridge, mostly on the north side to stay away from wind. Icy spots were many and a few sections were steep. Reached the summit of 5099 ft, after 3.5 hours and 3300 ft gain. Had to use imagination to see the views because of the weather.

About 1/2 mile on the way down, ran into another group of 6 who were following our tracks to Pratt.

Further on the descend, we chose to go off trail to come down on an open slope northwest of Olallie Lake to the lake, before the Pratt Lake sign. The lake was frozen solid. Spent some time on the lake but didn't take chance to walk across the lake.

Back to trail head ~1:45PM, 6 hours after the start. Talked to a couple of people who attempted Granite. Was told they turned back because of high wind.

I turned around a few hundred feet down rd 9030 at a washout that was likely the first of many, and headed to exit 47 to the Granite Mountain Trailhead. Snow appeared on the sides of the trail just past the turnoff toward Pratt Lake, but I made it another 2 miles or so before strapping on some microspikes and pulling out the trekking poles. There was about 2 inches of new snow over well-packed snowshoe tracks.

About 3/4 of the way around Olallie Lake two pairs of boots headed up to the SW ridge of Pratt, and continued along the ridge clear to the summit. At the top I met the owners of the tracks I followed, after thanking them for kicking in steps for me, they headed down and I enjoyed a foggy summit with Maverick. The cloud ceiling rested a few hundred feet above us, and lifted slightly as we rested. It was surprisingly warm with little to no wind.

Snowshoes are not necessary, though a few folks seemed to be satisfied using them. A fairly easy hike other than one 3 foot step down into a creek crossing that might prove a little tricky to those with shorter legs. Car to car in 5 hours flat.

I-90 Exit 47 Trail 1007 Weather clear, calm, I was surprised to learn it was very windy in Seattle.
8:10 AM Left trailhead. First mile or two snow-free. Plenty flowing water to at least 3600', maybe higher. Little ice on trail, traction devices unnecessary but poles were handy. We followed the trail up and around Ollalie Lake to the 4200' saddle, but it might do to traverse across the lake's outfall at 3740, heading WNW to Pratt's SE ridge. Trail conditions good, put snowshoes on below 4000', tracks ended about there. Several parties made Pratt summit after us, leaving a good snowshoe trail.
12:00 Pratt summit. Clear, fine views of Rainier, McClellan Butte, Defiance, Kaleetan & Chair, Pratt R valley [photo; watch for the new connector trail from Middle Fork Snoqualmie].
Left summit well after 1:00 PM. Returned to 4200' saddle and ascended the WNW ridge of West Granite Mt. Steep, deep, slow going with only 1 person to break trail. I'd wanted to continue on to Granite and descend its SW ridge, but we were too slow and tired, so we weenied. Considered descending the plausible SW ridge of West Granite, but it was 4:40 PM when we left the summit and very dark by 6:00, so we left the way we came. Back to car at 6:40.
With more speed and ambition, this Pratt - W. Granite - Granite traverse would be a good day trip loop. Short drive, not much avy exposure, fine views.
Daytona 500 weekend is a good time for the backcountry; many snowmobilers are home watching the big race.

Hiked into Island Lake from the Granite Mountain/Pratt Lake TH for lunch and a little fishing. Left the TH at 7:30 am with overcast skies and climbed to the Talapus Lake Trail, where the sun finally broke through the clouds. Several fresh deer tracks on the trail between the Pratt Lake Trail and Island Lake. Arrived at the lake at about 10:30 and ate lunch, fished for 45 minutes with no luck, and enjoyed the views. A few small muddy spots on the trail as you near Island Lake, but the trail is in great shape. Left Island Lake about noon and arrived back at the TH at 2:30. There were a few bugs at Island Lake, but nothing serious. Nice workout with some good views of Talapus, Ollalie and Island Lakes.
