On this beautiful sunny day, I began my solo hike south of Issaquah High School, followed the High School Trail to the power line and beginning of the Section Line Trail (SLT,) then up the steep SLT to the W. Tiger #3 summit. On my return, I descended the SLT as far as the W. Tiger RR Grade, then turned left and followed the RR Grade around the head of Many Creeks Valley to the intersection with the Poo Poo Point Trail (PPPT.) I did not visit the point today, but just descended the PPPT back to the power line and High School Trail. A total distance of about 8.5 miles, with an elevation gain of about 2,350 feet.
The trails all were moist with good footing, but none were muddy except for a few short sections of the RR Grade. There was no snow. This was a relatively uncrowded day. On my ascent, I had the SLT all to myself, and when I arrived at the W. Tiger #3 summit at 9 AM there was no one was there (huh?) I enjoyed a leisurely snack, and only when I prepared to leave the summit did three other hikers appear. I encountered one additional hiker on my SLT descent, but none on the RR Grade. On the PPPT, there were a few other hikers, and some uphill runners too. A few wildflowers are out: lots of trillium, some yellow violet, coltsfoot, spring beauty, salmon berry, red currant, et al. I saw a pileated woodpecker on my way up the SLT. While the heavily-pecked tree trunks are everywhere in the Tigers, I rarely see the birds themselves (they are more readily seen in Seattle parks.) Two words of caution for hikers planning to park at the trailhead south of Issaquah High School. One: the parking area is very small and can accommodate only a few cars. Two: high schoolers have been double parking there, often totally blocking cars already parked at the trailhead.

Friend and I decided on something more mellow, well, not exactly but less driving and a shorter day.
Headed off to the right and then branched on the Nook Trail, to Section Line and then to the rather steep trail named Unmaintained. An almost straight shot to the top where scores of folks were already enjoying the filtered sun and limited views. Took the regular trail down. Back at the car at just around noon. So steeper up and steeper down than the normal Mt Si trail but it was a shorter day - home in time to mow the lawn........ No real issues. |
