This route loops around the broad Edith Creek basin, leading through alpine flower fields, past thundering waterfalls, and over high, craggy peaks. In this one loop, you'll experience the best the Paradise region has to offer in terms of scenic beauty, rugged hiking, and varied terrain and ecosystems. You'll also find a memorial marking an important event in park history!

Head northeast from the lodge, entering the lower reaches of Edith Creek basin on the Skyline Trail. At 0.6 mile, the trail crosses directly above the crashing cascade of Myrtle Falls. The best views are from the trail bridge, looking directly down the falls.

Continuing past the falls, the trail splits almost immediately. Stay right; the left-hand trail heads steeply northeast toward Golden Gate, but you'll get there on a different route. Hike east on the trail that traverses out of the Edith Creek basin and loops around the headwall of the adjacent Paradise Valley.

On the east side of the basin, reach another trail junction at 1.5 miles. Stay left; the right-hand trail heads south down to the Paradise Valley Road in the Paradise valley. Start the steep climb up the side of Mazama Ridge. You attain the ridge crest in 0.5 mile, where the trail forks once more. Again, stay left to continue moving north. At this junction at 2 miles, the trail passes the Stevens-Van Trump Historical Monument above Sluiskin Falls. The memorial is a stone and concrete bench placed to honor the first two climbers to ascend Mount Rainier. The placement of the memorial, above Sluiskin Falls, is said to be at the spot where Chief Sluiskin waited for the climbers to return from their summit bid.

From this point, the trail angles northwest, climbing gradually to Golden Gate at 2.5 miles, where a trail leads left back to Myrtle Falls; stay straight ahead. Then climb more steeply, staying left at trail junctions, to Panorama Point (6800 feet) at 3.5 miles. From Panorama Point, descend past Glacier Vista, staying right at trail junctions above Alta Vista, then taking the east-bound trail below Alta Vista to return to the trailhead parking lot at 6 miles.
Driving Directions:

From Tacoma, drive east on State Route 7 to Elbe, then veer left onto SR 706 to enter the park at the Nisqually Entrance near Ashford. Continue east along the Nisqually Road to the Paradise Lodge parking area. Park in the large parking lot and find the trail near Paradise Lodge.

This is amazingly beautiful hike. We wen the Skyline trail up to Panorama Point but then took the Golden Gate down to save some time as it was late in the day. The only downside to this trail were the masses of people on this Labor Day weekend. Large groups, many of them trampling over the meadows, despite all the signs, some of them even littering. Fortunately after we got a mile or so away from Paradise the crowds get much thinner. I guess on a normal day it's nothing like that.

crowds aside this is simply a stunning hike, especially on a sunny day. The mountain was partly covered by clouds but still looked amazing. Flowers were everywhere on the meadows, lots of chipmunks everywhere and we saw a marmot. The trail is fairly easy with the first section paved. There are no real problems but when you get to Panorama Point you have to cross to snowfields one of them quite steep and slippery, bring poles and wear good boots. Of course we saw people attempting to cross in tennis shoes which did not seem an easy task.

Other than that there were no major obstacles to be found on the trail, should be a relatively easy hike for most people.

WTA worked on a portion of this trail on August 24th, 25th and
26th. On the day I helped (Saturday), we worked beside fields of Lupine, doing drainage work, and wooden step installation.
In between inhaling the scent of flowers all day, and pausing,
to let the herds of hikers step over our work areas; it was hard to get any work done. The later in the day, the more people
coming, and going up and down the trail.
I wandered the loop after work, up and around to Panorama
Point, views off to Mt Adams, and all those mountains growing
with each step. The flowers in all their variety, and the
people in every size, speaking different languages, all enjoying the mountain.
in all sizes, and speaking many different languages

I was on my own today and wanted to sneak in a few HaT miles. I also wanted to get the most of my annual pass to Mt. Rainier, so I headed to Paradise. The poor tourists were out of luck today, for the mountain was shrouded in clouds. Since I've been to Paradise about a million times, the wildflowers were enough to make it worthwhile for me. I pieced together a 3-4 mile walk by hiking the Alta Vista loop and a portion of a couple of other trails.

Hike a thon, #7. Woke up with a cold, but didn't stop me from hiking today. Word on the street is flowers are looking good at Paradise, and boy are they! Lower meadows not peaked yet you still have time, but higher stuff is looking real good now! We stopped counting marmots after 13 today. Two grouse were spotted off glacier view trail. I was not feeling good and Deb was my cheerleader telling me i could do it. Energy level way low and the heat didn't help, bugs are present. Lots of people out on trails today but i haven't seen one other hike-a-thoner yet..what's up with that?? Great day seeing so many happy hikers, marmots, & flowers. I even managed to get in 2 mini glissades. Twist cones at the lodge cafe to top off the day. Note there's some road construction going in and out, get there before 8AM and you will miss it.

So nice I did it twice, on Sunday and again on Monday. I thought the flowers were about at their prime. From gentians between the trail head parking and the visitor center, to marsh marigolds and shooting stars, and on to fresh pasque flowers and glacier and avalanche lilies.

Some snow on the upper ridges, wanded and lacking steps from the folks who like to slide their way downhill. I highly recommend trekking poles if you're not in that group.

The marmots along the golden gate trail seemed more content to go about their business and pose for photos during the week -- without the screams of children (that uncannily mimic alarm calls.)

I had not seen pink lupines before, they were a treat. Another surprise was watching the marmots sprawl out on the snowfields to chill out.

Awfully nice --
It's Paradise.

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
