Twin Falls run year-round for one very good reason: the area around North Bend receives more than 90 inches of rain each year. Seattle--just 35 miles west--gets half that much. The South Fork Snoqualmie River takes that massive amount of rainfall and puts it to use entertaining hikers. The river squeezes into a narrow rocky gorge before tumbling over a very impressive stairstep falls. Then, when the water has been churned into a frothy torrent, it plunges over a 150-foot rock wall, creating the stunning cascade of the Lower Twin Falls.
The first 0.7 mile of the trail pass through moss-laden forest along the shores of the South Fork Snoqualmie River. This flat mile provides kids plenty of opportunity to explore massive old nurse logs (fallen trees that act as nurseries for newly sprouted trees) and other interesting forest formations. Given the bounty of rain, and the lush forest growth, this area feels almost like an Olympic Peninsula rain forest--just without the massive cedars and hemlocks. After this long, flat run the trail climbs gently up a series of long switchbacks. About 1 mile out, you'll find a short spur trail on the right--this leads to a fantastic overlook of the lower falls, the mighty 150-foot cascade. Back on the main trail, you'll continue to climb another 0.5 mile or so to a bridge that takes you over the river gorge, directly between two of the stairstep falls.
Driving Directions:
From Seattle drive east on I-90 to exit 34. Turn south on 468th Avenue SE and proceed about 0.5 mile. Immediately before the South Fork Snoqualmie River bridge, turn left (east) on SE 159th Street and drive 0.5 mile to the trailhead parking lot at the road's end. Recent Trip Reports

We flew in from VA for a few days and wanted to find a short hike close to Seattle. After a little research, we found this hike and it was wonderful. The weather was awesome, crystal clear around 80 degrees. We arrived in the afternoon around 3pm and proceeded to fill out our registration form and submit $10 in the envelope for parking. The parking lot was mostly full, but still some spots available. Shortly after starting up the trail we met several young people coming down the trail in bathing suits.
There were several places to swim, but I bet the water was cold. The trail was well traveled and several spots to stop and take in the awesome view of the falls, huge trees, hanging moss, and beautiful undergrowth and ferns. There were three or four elevation stops with great views of different levels of the falls. Some rather steep climbs and several steps in places, but not too bad that anyone in reasonable shape couldn't handle. We would definately recommend this trip to anyone just about 40 mintues east of Seattle via I-90. I'll try to include a few photos. Chilco

We got to the trail head at 10 am with 3 kids, 3.5, 4 and 4.5 years old. The parking lot was beginning to fill up. (When we left at 12:30, the lot was full and parking was lined up by the side of the road almost 1/4-1/2 mile from the trail head.)
Make sure to have $10 since there is no way to get change when you arrive. The trail was lovely, large boulders for the kids to climb, beautiful old growth forest, no bugs today, lots of families on the trail, some brought strollers but them abandoned them since there are many, many steps. The walk was 90 percent dry with not much loose gravel so perfect for kids! There are many places to stop and have a snack with kids too. Day hike

Hiked Twin Falls today. The parking lot was full, but we didn't get there until 2pm, so we were able to grab a spot, as a few folks were leaving. For the amount of cars in the parking lot, it didn't seem like there were a ton of people on the trail, which was nice. There were a few muddy spots along the hike, but nothing you couldn't manage. The water is roaring right now. The falls were the fullest I have ever seen them (have done this hike several times). Planned on lunch along the water, but not very many rocks to choose from right now, since the river is running high. Bugs weren't too bad, but on the way back, we stopped at the lookout, where the big benches are, and the bugs came out.

What a great little hike to start the season with. It was a little on the busy side, even late in the afternoon but that was to be expected with it being a holiday. The trail was great, no snow just a bit of water in a few places but nothing extreme. It rained a bit but the tree covering kept us pretty dry. Lots of people with children, so I think this is a great hike to do with the kids. The falls were great and the river was beautiful. A few spots off the trail to view the river and have a quick lunch or just get a few quiet moments to yourself. We stopped at the bridge to take it all in and as we started to continue up to the view above the falls another hiker coming down informed us that there was a small black bear just off the trail about 100ft or so from the bridge. We decided to head back after that. I would recommend this hike to anyone, especially beginning hikers, families with children and anyone who loves waterfalls.
