West Lake Mills

This trail, just under 2 miles, follows along the west shore of Lake Mills. Forest all around, with wonderful views of the lake. A few creeks and streams flow through the trail, but are easily passable over the foot bridge or Log bridge.

There are several series of ups and downs, so this trail isn't exactly easy. But with the views, and with the trail ending at Boulder Creek, it's a nice walk through the forest.

Driving Directions:

Headed west on HWY 101 from Port Angeles, turn left onto Olympic Hot Springs Road (just before the bridge over Elwha River/Lake Aldwell). Continue down Olympic Hot Springs Road, until you reach the Park Gate. In summer time you will have to stop and get a pass. Follow this road until you reach Lake Mills. Take the Left to the Boat Ramp, where the trailhead is at the end of the dirt road.

On the way up to the trailhead, spotted a bachelor group of deer, 6 total, with freshly grown antlers (still in velvet).

Got to the trailhead about 9, then turned around to go down to the ranger station. The trail head has a sign that says "Boulder Creek 2.0, Trail End 1.9" So I was a little unsure if I was at the correct trail. Turns out I was, and it connects to Boulder Creek.

The trail starts at an incline, with a small switchback, then drops down again. It maintains this up and down motion through out the trail. But despite that, it was a fun trail. You cross over a small foot bridge, then you start picking up the sound of a creek. A short ways down from the foot bridge is the creek (name unknown), and one crosses it via a foot log. Through the trail, I continued to get views of the lake and surrounding mountains. There were some spots that the lake crested a few feet from the trail.

This is an easy trail for those avid hikers, but for the kind of beginner like me, it was a little on the difficult side.

A trip over to the north side of the Olympics for called for a 3-day getaway. We got over to Sequim for lunch of Friday, then a hike along the Dungeness Spit for some sea level views. Saturday morning we drove up to Hurricane Ridge to check out the view of the Olympic Mountains on a clear day with the temp at 65 degrees. We could see Mt. Olympus where I had stood on top of back in 1999. The wind was really blowing and the snow conditions we not very good for snowshoeing, so we decided to head back down and do a hike in the Elwha River area.

We stopped for lunch at the picnic spot near the Elwha Ranger Station, then on to the trailhead for the West Lake Mills Trail at Lake Mills. Nice trail with ups and downs along the lake. Several creek crossings along the way, with wild flowers coming out and some large old growth Doug Firs to view. Saw a buck and doe near the trail having their afternoon snack. The trail ends abruptly high above Boulder Creek. There is one campsite at the lake just before getting to the creek. A party had come in by boat since their camp had ice chests and lawn chairs. They must have used canoes or kayaks, as the so called boat launch is full of logs and you could not launch a power boat from a trailer. Only saw a few other hikers out on this trail. We had not been up the Elwha River entrance of the park before, so got to see some new county.
