Winter just won't let go on Cougar Mountain, which sported a coat of new snow on its higher elevations today. But the sun finally did come out in the afternoon, promising better weather to come. There were lots of new leaves and buds on the plants--I even saw a trillium blooming.

Here are the conditions of the Cougar Mountain trails that I visited:

Old Man Trail (C11):

Good, a little muddy.

Bypass Trail (C9):

Good condition. One short slope was a bit scoured by water runoff.

East Fork Trail (C8):

Mud is a problem in spots. Recently worked on by the WTA. Drainage is working well, but some of the clay soil used for fill is mushy.

Tibbets Marsh Trail, south end from Clay Pit Road to creek(N9):

Some of the recent work done by the WTA may have to be redone, because the clay fill dirt has turned into a mushy, trampled mess in places. Hopefully, summer weather will solidify the clay permanently.

W. Tibbetts Creek (E10):

One of the prettier trails on Cougar, which gives views into Tibbetts Creek's little gorge. An old low-standard trail, muddy and rooty in places.

Bear Ridge (E3):

Another nice trail with some interesting scenery, home of the Fantastic Erratic. A few mud holes and eroded sections with failed drainage higher up. Great condition lower down.

Talus Connector

A new and well-crafted trail forming a useful link between the Bear Ridge Trail and the Talus development. In excellent condition.

Surprise Creek Trail (E2):

Serious drainage problems and erosion below No Name Trail junction. One big blowdown. This trail needs help! Above No Name, the trail is in much better condition, although the somewhat undersized drain dips (as usual) need maintenance.

Coyote Creek Trail (C3):

In good shape, mud holes are the main problem. There are a few filled-in drain dips toward the top end of the trail.

This was a last hike for the season. I had thought about going to Squak Mt. but decided to go to AA Peak and do a short loop. This was probably a good choice as the AA Peak parking lot was icy and the trails at this altitude were the same.

I did a short 4 mile loop and found the trails got better with warming temperatures and a drop in altitude. Once on the Protector Trail the snow and ice softened and even cleared for long stretches making walking easier. There was one significant blow down on the West Tibbets Creek Trail that needed to be ducked under (on hands and knees) but other than this obstacle the trails were relatively easy to walk.

The day was dry and without many people on the trails at 11:00. I saw a runner and dog but that was it for the 2 hours out. Cougar Mt. Park was stunning in the snow with some ""peek-a-boo"" views of the Cascades and Glacier Peak from the Shangri La Trail.

A trip to Cougar yesterday, and the Anti-Aircraft Peak Trailhead. This is obviously the quiet side of Cougar - I had the place to myself for three hours of wandering on a stunning, clear day, though two other cars did arrive as I left at 1.30pm. I've never yet found the Red Town trailhead with less than half a dozen cars.

The trails were in good condition - hard with frost early on, but when things melted after midday there were still only occasional muddy patches. Multiple minor blow-downs, including one awkwardly angled across the Bear Ridge Trail near the junction with W Tibbetts that could use a chainsaw.

Close in, and not too well-travelled - the north side of Cougar seems to be a good choice for a quick half day.

I had a short amount of time on Monday morning to do a walk/hike and went to Cougar Mt. area. The trails near AA Peak were quite muddy with a fair amount of snow on the sides of the trails.

The walk was an easy 2 miles that took about one hour. Other than the mud holes all of the trails were in good shape. A King County crew was working on improving drainage on the Shangri La trail.

Sunday was a quite a day, waking up in Iowa and ending the day with a hike in Cougar Mt. Park.

The hike was nice and not very muddy considering all the rain we have been having. The park was quiet and the trails in good condition with the exception of several wind falls.

Hike was about 3 miles long and took about 1 hour allowing me with a 16:45 start to be out before the gate closed.

The air was fresh, no rain and a peacful time to ponder life was worth the time spent to drive to this gem of a park in Pugetopolus.
