Hunting Season Information
What hikers need to know for staying safe this hunting season.
Autumn
is hunting season, and each year, hunters come out to pursue elk, deer,
and other game. Hikers exploring our public lands in September and
October should be aware of these hunting seasons,
and take some steps to help ensure their own safety. Please keep in
mind that most national forest lands in Washington state are open to
hunting.
This Monday, September 1 kicks off the start of hunting season in
Washington state for some game birds statewide, including Ruffed
Grouse, Blue Grouse and Spruce Grouse. These may be hunted with a
shotgun,
pistol, or rifle. September 1 also marks the start of archery hunting
season for deer; September 8 begins archery season for elk.

Below are some tips on staying safe when you're out on the hiking trails during hunting season:
- Wear bright clothing. Make yourself more visible. Choose colors that stand out, like bright blue or green, and avoid blacks, browns, earth-toned greens and animal-colored clothing.
- Make noise. Whistle, sing or carry on a conversation as you walk to alert hunters of your presence. Sound carries well across mountain basins, and hunters should be listening for any sounds of animal movement.
- Make yourself known. If you do hear shooting, raise your voice and let hunters you're in the vicinity.
- Know when hunting seasons are. You can continue to hike, but keep aware of where hunting is taking place. Grouse and bear hunting season is typically September - December. October is the high point of hunting season, including deer and elk. Hunting is not allowed in National Parks.
