The loop trail leaving Tipsoo Lake meanders through meadows that offer some of the best views of Mount Rainier found anywhere. The route is relatively flat--it rolls up and down but has no ridiculously steep sections and only a few real climbs. The route takes advantage of the Pacific Crest Trail, as well as some of the heavily used tourist trails around Tipsoo Lake. Don't expect quiet solitude here, though the beauty of the terrain you pass through offsets any worries about crowds.
We recommend completing the loop in a clockwise direction in order to get the best views of Mount Rainier during the hike. Therefore, from the parking lot, follow the trail northeast around Tipsoo Lake and then descend through meadows to the Pacific Crest Trail parking lot on the east side of the pass. Cross to the south side of the highway and follow the PCT east, then south along the eastern flank of Naches Peak. As you stroll down the trail, enjoy masses of western anemone, beargrass, lupine, paintbrush, and more. At 1.5 miles, stop for a rest or a leisurely lunch at the wide bench overlooking Dewey Lakes. The trail splits here. Our loop route goes right (west) around the southern flank of Naches Peak. You'll soon see Mount Rainier thrusting skyward before you, while more meadows open up at your feet. In another 1.5 miles, you'll have looped back around the south and west side of Naches Peak and be back at the highway, opposite Tipsoo Lake. Cross the highway to return to your car. For a longer hike, at the trail junction on the bench above Dewey Lakes, continue to your left down the Pacific Crest Trail to reach Dewey Lakes in 1.5 miles, descending gradually at first, then losing 650 feet in the last mile. At Dewey Lakes, bear to the left. Backcountry campsites are located on the north side of the lake.
Driving Directions:
From Enumclaw, drive east about 47 miles on State Route 410 to the junction with SR 123. Stay left to continue east on SR 410 another 3 miles. Park in the Tipsoo Lake parking lot on your left just past the footbridge marking Chinook Pass. Recent Trip Reports

Great weather, in a great location, on this particular date there was still snow on the trail in several location, 2 or 3 small snow bridges that seemed to be holding fine at the time. Mt. Rainier almost came out, but a great walk none the less. Good for the soul.
Watch the video on my YouTube Channel, find "Naches Peak Loop Hike, Chinook Pass Summit, WA", open the video, watch full screen. It is a little over 2 minutes in length, good information. Bookmark, share, enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/[…]/UCaeUkaZE9EQkKrIjGv_HGmA?feature=watch Great scenery, super alpine location, very enjoyable. It is always a pleasure to talk with those on the trail and on occasion include their pictures. My card provides them with my YouTube link so they can share with family and friends where they have been. Not everybody can get out to see such beauty. Day hike

Arrived at the trailhead a little bit past 12:30. We went clockwise along the hike, and almost right away started hiking in snow/mud/water. The majority of the eastern portin of the trail, at least 50% is covered in snow. Would recommend some sort of boots, we did not need poles but I am sure they would be very helpful for some.
We saw eight groups along the way, only one group going the opposite way we were going. There were wild flowers blooming the entire hike and the view of Rainer is fantastic. Arrived back at the car just before 3:00, took us a little under 2 1/2 hours of actual hiking time since we stopped for lunch. Day hike

Decided to do a nice evening hike after work and arrived at the trailhead around 8pm. A bit of snow on the trail but otherwise great. A few other hikers. Full moon lit up everything nicely.

Snow still on Naches Peak side of trail for first 1/4 mile but trail is easy to find. Tipsoo lake portion of trail still under snow and could not find end. PCT portion of trail from Dewey Lake sign to Road was mostly under snow (90% of the way). Snow if melting out leaving some stream crossings rather precarious. Good place to get sucked under the snow cap and down a stream going over a cliff..... Don't recommend hiking it without poles. Otherwise, was a great hike. One view on the Naches Peak side of the loop, you can see Mt Ranier up close and (I believe) Mt St Helens off to the left. Great vistas.

Ethan & I set out to snowshoe around Naches Peak on this sunny, hot Saturday. There was no snow along the highway until about 100 yards before the parking area. There is maybe 8 feet at the pass. We hadn't been going more than 10 minutes when it became apparent that it would be much easier & probably safer to boot it rather than use our snowshoes. The snow was compact enough that we did not posthole, but soft enough that we had good traction. There was some bare ground in the saddle above Dewey Lakes and on the traverse from the saddle to the first view of Rainier. We even saw some phlox blooming along this stretch. Both ponds are still frozen, but there was quite a bit of bare ground along the south side of Naches Peak. Tipsoo Lake is still frozen, but Upper Tipsoo has some open water. The views of Naches Peak, Rainier, and the rest of the south cascades was spectacular. We saw some tracks, but only 2 other parties. What a glorious day!
