Winter enthusiasts will be happy to hear that Hurricane Ridge Road is open seven days a week throughout the winter this year. As part of a trial project, Olympic National Park, in conjunction with the people and businesses of Clallam County, have raised the money to have the road plowed every day. In the past, the road was only plowed Friday through Sunday.

The Olympic Peninsula as always been a great source for winter hiking, but Hurricane Ridge is really the only destination that offers guaranteed cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding. Now visitors and residents will be able to do their winter play during the weekday too.

The communities near Olympic National Park are hoping that the effort will provide an economic boost during the off-season. Business leaders and city governments raised $75,000 to help fund the winter access. The National Park Service chipped in $250,000 in new money.

What can you do along the Hurricane Ridge Road in the winter?

There are several cross country skiing and snowshoeing options. Favorites in WTA's Hiking Guide (powered by Mountaineers Books) include Hurricane HillKlahane Ridge and Mount Angeles. Obstruction Point Road and the Wolf Creek Trail are also good options.

In addition, Hurricane Ridge has a children snowplay area (for kids 8 and under) and a small downhill ski/snowboard area (rope tows and T-bar, lessons available) that is open on holidays and weekends. More information is available from Olympic National Park and the Hurricane Ridge Ski and Snowboard Area.

Just a note: All vehicles must carry chains during the winter on the Hurricane Ridge Road. Also, it is imperative that you check the Road & Weather Hotline (360-565-3131) before heading to the park (or follow their Twitter feed). Historically, inclement weather conditions close the road about 20% of scheduled days. A van service also is running from Port Angeles Wednesday through Sunday, for those who'd rather leave their cars behind.
