The Talapus, Ollalie, Island Lake route is a good, moderate workout for a hot day. The abandoned road from the Talapus trailhead has been regraded and is very nice. The 2.5 miles to Talapus lake run through cool forest and up gentle switchbacks to the various bridges over the spillways. A few more switchbacks from the lake bring you to a signed junction with the Pratt Lake connector. This takes you to the easy going Pratt Lake trail up to Ollalie Saddle. Just beyond this is a lovely picnic spot through moss draped trees to a rock tumble in the open breeze.
The trail beyond this point is a bit narrower and more open to the sun as it curves around Mt. Pratt and descends into Bandera's Backyard. Here are Island, Rainbow, Frog, and Mason Lakes. We got some huckleberries and blueberries here but most were gone.
