Mt. Pilchuck is such a popular hike because it is close, short, and offers fantastic views. However with snow starting at 3000' and a swirling snow storm at the top, there were no views to be had. Access to the trailhead starts at the Pilchuck road just past the bridge which is just beyond Verlot on the Mountain Loop Highway. The road is clear half way then slushy, slippery snow about 2" deep. The trail is a slushy wet waterhole until you cross the small creek. From there to the top it is crunchy good gripping snow along a well trod trail. Snowshoes not required but gaiters and trax recommended. The summit has fine examples of rime ice and the rocks are slippery and dangerous. We climbed the ladder and unlatched the big heavy hatch to gain welcome access to the shelter of the former fire lookout. The winds are always brisk on the summit, dropping the chill factor down to 20 degrees. We shared the trail today with about 17 adults, 6 teens, a 4 month old baby, and three dogs. I took some great photos and when I figure out how to save them within the limited range of this website, I'll start attaching them.
