I led my January Winter Walk for the Cascadians to the White Bluffs South on this cool, cloudy day. When we arrived at the trailhead we encounted a crew involved in replanting the area devistated by the fire in 2007. We headed off down the old highway and walked all the way to the gate at the south end just past the power lines, then climbed to the top of the ridge above the Great Valley where we had lunch. As we ate we saw a huge flock of geese flying above the river and were serenaded by a pack of coyotes. After lunch we walked back along the ridgetop and across the flat to the old highway & back to the cars. There was no snow & the ground was not muddy, which made for very nice walking when we were off the pavement. Even on this cloudy day the views of the Columbia & the bluffs were spectacular.

White Bluffs
It's nice to see folks going to White Bluffs. I was there this past spring and was sorry about the total devastation of the vegetation there; old growth sage and antelope brush and millions of flowers and the old orchards left by the families who settled the area in the early 1900's - gone.
But I'm looking forward to seeing it's re-vegetation by nature and by hard-working volunteers. It's among my favorite Central Washington hikes; I found it in the Bauer/Nelson book, Best Desert Hikes.
