Driving up to the Talapus Lake trailhead off exit 45, you will encounter a wash out in the roadway. There were cones marking the hazard. This hazard may become worse, but on this day if you have a capable vehicle with enough clearance and you have faith in your driving ability, drive up to the trailhead. There are a couple more washouts along the way. If you don't want to chance it, go find a different hike. You are still 3-4 miles from the trailhead, and the walk up the gravel road in the sun isn't going to be fun, and you still have to walk back down.
Other than that, the hike is great! Talapus Lake is an easy two miles in. After that, we encountered a little snow and mud. At about 3/4 mile after Talapus you will encounter a stream that basicaly goes right across the trail. If you want to go to the shores of Lake Olallie, do not cross the stream. Turn left and go up. (There is a sign but it is on the back of a tree and not facing you) If you want to go to the Lake Olallie overlook, which is a real nice view of the lake and Mt. Rainier, or on to Pratt Lake, Island Lake or Rainbow Lake, go across the stream. There is a 1/4 mile trail that will lead to the Pratt Lake trail. Keep going up and in another mile you will be at the overlook. Sweet!
