Why You Should Go Now
Wildflowers blooming
Given the day off work before the 4th of July and the beautiful weather, I thought it was time to finally hike Mount Si. I think all Seattle area folks should hike this trail at least once. It may be a bit crowded, but for the most part everyone is out there to enjoy themselves and people are pretty friendly.

The trail was clear, easy to follow and well maintained, but steep pretty much the whole way and some sections with roots/rocks to be careful of when you're tired. About halfway up is the first place to get a decent view. Enjoy it for a bit, but keep going b/c it only gets better at the top. The lower summit area has incredible views and is pretty much all rock. Even with large crowds, there's room to go find your own little niche to relax and take some pictures.

If you have the ability to do it safely, you must make the scramble up to the top of the haystack. The views are amazing and you get to pass through a mellow little alpine meadow on the way. On a clear day like this, you could see Rainier, downtown Seattle, and more. I recommend staying up there for a bit to rest and make the most of the effort it took to get there.

I take umbrage at some of the things this reviewer said. The trail was fairly clear and there are a few areas where you could either turn left or right and it wasn't clearly marked. I did see one hiker venture the wrong way, although there was a sign.

Based on this reviewer I looked for "sections with roots/rocks" and there aren't any. If you've ever done a trail lined with trees, you're going to have roots growing on the sides every once in a while. There are so few areas like this that it's not even worth mentioning. I've hiked on John Muir trail in Yosemite, and the trail to Mt Si doesn't look much different from it.

The first real nice view is near the top, near the 3.5 mile marker, nowhere near the half way point. The view only gets better from here.

I have no idea what he's talking about with finding your own little niche with large crowds. There isn't much space up there. Once you get to the top it's very rocky and there is no more trail so to speak. You're basically sitting on top of rock and it's all climbing. The views are incredible, but the reviewer makes it sound like the top is spacious (lots of free room to roam) which it is not.

The trail is clearly marked, my first time up didnt require much thinking. And, having hiked many trails in the area, I too find this one to have excessive roots/wear that you have to watch out for when tired. Easy to catch a toe of a boot and trip.

And at the rock pile before the haystack, there is plenty of room, even on a busy day, to find a place to have a bite alone. Might have to do a 10' scramble, but I've been up there at least five times this summer and always find a quiet place away from the crowds to sit.
