Ripe berries

Ruby on Putrid Pete's Peak. The summit register is under the flat rock.
Took the annual pilgrimage to PPP. The route is well described in prev trip reports, i would just add that, immediately after the first talus field crossing, there is a junction that is hard to notice. Look uphill to the left, this is where you want to go, not straight and down.

No water at all until Mason Lake and the ridge is very exposed and warm. Also a ton of bugs. I took the ridge over to Mt Defiance but didn't go up there due to time and water. The meadow on the SW face of Defiance may have the highest density biomass of blueberries I've ever seen. Bring a bucket.

And finally, a big THANKS to whoever did the nice work on the old mason lake trail. I think its better than I've ever seen it. It's like a real trail :D.

Except for the parking lot and the short distance on the Ira Spring trail, I didn't see another person the whole trip.
Looking down from PPP and across to McClellan Butte

SuperTrail Maintenance Man

Posted by val d at Oct 11, 2009 04:56 PM
I met the guy who is maintaining the old trail today on a hike up. He's a wonderful talkative middle aged guy named Paul. We had a great chat and he was proud that we were so appreciative of his personal work on the trail. He does many "unmaintained" trails in the area. He seemed to be having a blast and all he was using was a folding back pack style camp saw. Go SuperTrail Maintenance Man!! Val 10/11/09
