I did some reconnaissance work out at Damon Point State Park near Ocean Shores yesterday. The point has been breached and Protection Island is now, at least temporarily, once again an island. A knee-deep wade would be required to reach the island but with the ever shifting tide, this could become shallower or deeper at any moment.

The breach seems to have occurred at the outlet of the stream that previously washed out the access road and has extended across the point. Keep this in mind for future visits to this state park.

Thanks Skimpyphud for your recon on this one. Looks like I'm going to have to moderate the description in my book on this hike too. How's the SS Catala doing? Still visible?

Hi Craig:

It's good to hear from you. My dad and I met you on a day hike to Satsop Lakes a few years ago.

As for the SS Catala, the Washington State Department of Ecology reports that the wreck was completely removed in August 2007 due to environmental hazards associated with thick oily sludge found within the ship's hull. A link to the final report can be found here:

I hiked as far as the breach in the spit and made the decision to turn around because I didn't have tidal information and the last thing I wanted to do was be forced to swim my way back to the mainland. As for a possible edit to your book (which is superb by the way), I would suggest removing this hike or make it clear that it should only be attempted during low tides and fair weather.

Happy hiking!
