- Why You Should Go Now
- Wildflowers blooming
Hiked Whiskey Dick from the western trail head (the parking lot and horse corral along the highway at mile post 18); not from the road listed in the desert hikes book. Hiked the ATV-only road for ~2.5 miles (someone tried to drive the road in a sedan but he turned around after a block; you need a jeep or ATV or cycle to drive the road). After a few blocks walk, the wildflowers began along the ATV road. Seemed like a new species popped up after every 100 feet. After a half mile or so, the flower show died off but it restarted after 1.5 to 2 miles as I climbed toward the high point. Around ~2.5 or less miles from the trail head, I took the side road that headed due east to an obvious high point - where the views were good and the hedgehog cacti were blooming. Outside of three groups of ATVs who quickly passed me, only saw one other hiker during my travels. While I was driving between the two trail heads along the highway, I spotted a young coyote sitting on a hillside contemplating options for brunch.
