- Why You Should Go Now
- Wildflowers blooming
We began our hike at the Eastern entrance to the Quilomene Wildlife Area as described in Best Desert Hikes Washington. If we were to do this hike again, we would hike the road from the western entrance to the area at MP 18. We were disappointed in the area we hiked as the wildflowers didn't meet the expectations we read about in the trail description. As we read in Terpene's report, we found the trail uninspiring. We hiked almost down to Rocky Coulee, but turned around as the weather was threatening rain and we knew the road would become "muckey" when wet.As we reached our high point on the return the rain came with VERY strong winds and we heard thunder in the distance. This was short-lived and sun soon returned! We were able to drive about 2 miles from the Vantage HWY parking at a fenced area with a small foundation and a bluebird house. Near here was our flower highlight as there were several blooming bitterroot plants. After our hike we visited PSE's Wild Horse Wind and Solar Facility which was VERY interesting. We arrived shortly before they were closing so we will have to return when we can spend more time at the facility.
