Lighthouse on Dungeness Spit photo by j brink
Our group of seven Mountaineers made the hike out the Dungeness Lighthouse on a well timed low tide and great weather. A combination hard to come up with around here no matter what the forecast is. The low tide was about -2.7 and I think we were about an hour into the hike out to the lighthouse when the low tide was at it's lowest. The sand was about as good as it gets as it was well packed. The Olympics were just showing through clouds, but as we progressed the area around the inland became clouded over but the spit continued to be sunny. We spent about an hour at the lighthouse area eating lunch, taking in a tour of the lighthouse and resting and exploring the beach. The way back was a bit more difficult as we were headed into a wind that had picked up and some of the prime walking area was now under water. There was still lots of space to walk. One surprise on the way back was a bald eagle was hovering about fifteen feet above our group (and I had just stowed the camera). We also saw three eagles fighting over a catch one of them had on the beach.

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
