Koppen Mountain
Many of the Teanaway Trails seem lightly used, and Koppen Peak was no exception. The trail climbs along De Roux Creek about 1.5 easy miles to an intersection. From there it’s a left turn and up a long series of switchbacks to a dry saddle and trail intersection. To get to Koppen Peak, we found the trail through a campsite on our left. This last mile of trail climbs steeply uphill through forest with one or two easily managed blowdowns. No snow to speak of, just a step or two's worth. It’s steep and rubbly in places.
The summit of Koppen was great, terrific views of Mt. Stuart and on down to Rainier. We were divebombed by some interesting flying insects at the summit, more interesting than annoying. In fact, there were basically no mosquitoes at all on this hike!!
This was a beautiful Saturday in July and we saw no one else on the trail until almost back to the trailhead when we were passed by a couple who had been up to Gallagher Head Lake.
Stats: about 7.5 miles roundtrip and 2300 feet of gain.
