We did the north approach on January 1, 2011 and found the trail frozen and clean. It was a wonderful hike through old growth forest. We only went about 4 miles down the trail before turning around. The trail was faily clear of debris and there were no other hikers on it.
On January 23, 2010 we used the south approach and hiked to Maple Grove campground which is about 4 miles up the trail. The trail is in good condition with some debris. One part of the trail is washed out and you have to use over hanging branches to secure your footing on the slope. There are a few larger trees across the trail. It was a great hike through the old growth forest with plenty of huge trees. One, near Maple Grove, is a giant. The clouds hung over Mt. Baker so we were unable to see it from Mape Grove. We encounter no other hikers.
