MESSAGE TO DOG OWNERS: Please make sure that mans best friend is always by your side restrained even when you reach your destination.
My wife our boston and I headed up Rattlesnake Ridge Trail on Saturday August 6th and made it up right about lunch time. We were enjoying our lunch on the ridge as was about 45 other people and their pets, taking in the scenary & watching the chipmunks score treats. There was one dog that wasnt properly retrained and it bolted toward the chipmunk & the edge of the cliff. By the shock of everyone the animal went over the side as eveyone gasped in horror.
I knew that there was a ledge down below that he could have landed on so I jumped up and before my wife realized what was going on she and everyone else saw me hustle my way down the ledge 20 vertical ft down. with much coaxing I was able to grab the dogs leash and try to force the dog up the 90 deg angle face losing grip, almost getting knocked off I hand to let go of the dog to have it crash back down to the ledge below. Climbing back down, I go for his leash again and this time being extremely freaked out he tries to redirect (bite) me. I pull away and calm both of us down enough to get the leash make it back up and with the help of a another strainger we were able to get the lady back her dog.
I wanted to say thank you to the man that as I jumped in to help me rescue the dog and help me back up myself!
So please for the safety of yourself, your animal and in this case a crazy hiker that didnt think about the risk for his wife and 4 kids, PLEASE make sure that you keep your dog restained by your side.
Thank you
