As expected this was a real tough hike. I hiked solo and it took me over 3.5 hours to get up to the summit. The last mile or so was mostly covered in snow. Traction devises are highly recommended; especially the last stretch to the summit was really steep and I had fallen several times even with my crampons on. With the beautiful weather on Friday, the view on top was just gorgeous and definitively was worthwhile the effort. With such a steep and mostly maintained trail, going down wasn't easy neither; especially on the knees! I started around 8:15AM and there was only 1 person ahead of me with 2 more gentlemen who followed after a few minutes which I got to hike a portion of the trail with Fred (it was nice to meet you Fred!)

Overall I loved doing this tough hike as it is a great exercise and make all my other past hikes look pretty moderate in difficulty.

By the way the actual mailbox was fully buried in snow and the only thing I could see was a big hole in the ground, maybe somebody tried to get to it before..

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
