McClellan Butte from the trail...love those avalanche chutes with deep warm snow. (mcamp)
The forecast was for sun and warm April weather so my wife and I headed for Dirty Harry's Peak. While I have done Bandera, mailbox, McClellan butte, Granite, Washington and Si many many times...this was my first time on Dirty Harry's trail. The warm weather created a washout on the trail...there were times when we wondered if this was the correct trail when it really was a fast moving creek washing down the snowmelt. The trail is very rocky and wet but not really muddy. We passed the 5 gal can (looks like an old milk can) and headed up the creek (trail) to the top. At one point we pretty much had to cross a raging creek to get to the upper trail deep in snow. The snow is soft and melting but still deep. We post holed to the rocky boulders and scrambled close to the top. The trip down the boulders was a bit more challenging in and out of snow and finally glissaded to the creek again. We decided to head out to the Balcony and had a nice warm sunny rest on the cliff with a perfect view East and South. A perfect day that will be even better in a couple weeks when the upper snow will likely be melted and give way to a summer trail.
Upper trail very soggy before turning uphill towards the boulder field. I broke through to deep water once too many times. (mcamp)

View East from Dirty Harry's Balcony...beautiful views and warm rock to rest on. (mcamp)

Diane showing the upper trail becoming a torrent, no fall zone. Cold rushing water from the snow melt makes for a nice challenging trail in places. (mcamp)
