Well kept trail
You can find the trail-head right off of Exit 38 on I-90. It will be in the Olallie State Park parking lot. There is a small trail that leads up to an old logging road. There will be a sign where the trail and road intersect, make a right here and follow the road. Keep an eye on the left side of the road, the first unmarked trail will be the one that goes up Mt. Washington.

The trail is well kept. The only issues were some snow and water on the trail. Along the way, there is a really cool cave where it looks like climbers like to boulder or lead climb. It's a nice place to sit and rest for a bit. Every once in awhile the trees give way to nice mountain views.

Eventually, you'll reach a tree with a sign that reads "Mt. WA" and an arrow that points towards a switchback. This is how you know you're on the right track.

Once you reach a part of the trail where there is an opening on the right, you've reached the end. I ended up continuing down the trail, expecting more, but I hit a sign that pointed to Mt. Washington back where I was before. So, I assumed that was the end and turned around.

Great sunny day, perfect for a hike!

Mount Washington --- Great Wall Trail

The "end" you reached is the one described in the published hiking guide for the "Owl Hike", where you stop at the viewpoint looking towards Rattlesnake Mountain. The Owl Hike was an after-work hike that was popular years ago. The complete hike to the top goes on to the summit, another 2 miles of thigh-burning via a bowl on the interior of the mountain, then up the true summit. The alternative, the Great Wall Trail, goes up Change Peak (the false summit) and along a wall-like structure to the true summit (4 miles more). Definitely go back to explore--more wonders await you!

I responded to Hiker Girl last month with the following:

This site uses the Day Hiking guidebooks verbatim for many of the hikes in the hiking guide section including this one, which is from the Snoqualmie Region Day Hiking series. A member of one of the hiking groups I am in was going to lead a hike late last year & mentioned Mt Washington off I90. I naturally thought of a summit hike & was giving her some tips. Turned out she was planning the 4 mile RT hike in the newer guidebook. The shorter turnaround location is called the "Owl Hikers Spot" An older guidebook, 55 Hikes in the Snoqualmie Region is the first guidebook I used for hikes along the I90 corridor. It describes the history behind the Owl Hikers and also has a separate hike to the summit (It is the Great Wall hike described above). I'm surprised that no guidebooks (that I'm aware of) list the new trail to Mt Washington summit. The older guidebook is by Ira Spring & Harvey Manning the same guys who did the 100 Hikes series. Those guidebooks are no longer in print but you can find used copies on-line. Some of the hikes in the older guidebooks are no longer doable (or much more difficult than originally). I loved those older guidebooks & still use them. I may scan the older guidebook entries for this hike & post them on this site later.

I did scan the guidebook entries & tried to post them on this site but they were for some reason denied. I may try to submit them one more time. It seems like the new guidebook entry of the Owl Hikers Spot confuses a lot of folks maybe thinking it is a 2 mile (one-way) summit hike.

I second the previous commenter that a summit hike is well worth it!

Happy hiking.

Hey thanks! I was wondering where I was going. I decided to play it safe and not get lost, but I'll definitely have to go back.

When the Snoqualmie Region book was done (2006 for 2007 publication) the wonderful new trail to the summit of Mount Washington wasn't in existance yet. With confusion over roads beyond the Great Wall at the time, it was left out of the details but of course the upcoming 2nd edition of the book will cover the entire trip in detail. Thanks for thinking about it and sharing between each other!

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
