- Day hike
Trailhead: Railroad yard just east of Scenic on US 2 (west of Stevens Pass).
Destination: Peak 6062 at headwaters of Scenic Creek (USGS Scenic).
Route: Follow Scenic Creek (more or less) to its headwaters, then go up.
Avalanche conditions: Due to high temperatures in the afternoon, the snow was very loose and unconsolidated. One needed to be cautious of loose snow avalanches. In the process of glissading we set off one big one and several small ones ourselves. In each case, we were cognizent of the potential danger prior beginning the glissades. Party members were watching one another.
Equipment: snowshoes were needed; trekking poles were desirable; crampons and ice axes were taken, but not used.
Weather & visibility: terrific though there was a bit of haze in the extreme distance, e.g., it was difficult to see the Olympics. The views are outstanding above about 5000 ft.
Snow conditions: There was a fair amount of snow at the RR yard trailhead (~2300 ft). It was intermittent though until about 2800 ft. There was a little brush (e.g., devil's club) from the trailhead to little above the power lines (~2800 ft). There is no trail; it's all bushwhacking.
Times: car to summit - 5 hrs; car to car - 8:45 hrs.
Companions: Tord, Jon, Amy, Jim.
