Got to the trail head about 1:15 in the middle of the 10% chance of rain. The weather cleared up quickly as I began one of my favorite hikes. The lower trail is muddy in places with blow down that requires some deviation from the regular trail. Once you start uphill in earnest the trail is relatively dry until the last quarter mile or so. Then mushy snow takes over. No post holing, but be careful as these slopes are steep at times. As usual, the lake basin is a wonderland and never disappoints . As I sat at Picnic Rock there was absolute silence except for the distant crack of avalanche from Mt Index. A truly memorable hike. About 4 hours car to car. Hiking boots recommended. Trekking poles helpful.
