Today was the unofficial opening day of hiking season. As the chairman of the event, the three of us held a little parade. The parade route started at two miles before the official Squire creek trail head (due to road closures several years back) and we marched up the trail. A little post-holing in the snow made the hike fun and eventually we made it after 33 water crossings. (Ok...I thought it would be fun to count them all.)I have been up there before via 8 mile creek and the views didn't open up much but it was still nice to be able to hike up in the mountains this early in the year. The last 3/4 of a mile is kinduh mc-nasty and I would wait a good month until the snow melts and becomes a little funner. Oh......If you like mud and roots, this is a hike for you! I will say that when it melts out it is certainly easier than getting their via 8 mile creek.

To summarize, its an easy hike until the last mile. Then it gets interesting!

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
