A friend an I headed up to Heather Lake off the Mountain Loop Highway on Saturday. The trail is quite manageable at this point. The hike is two miles in, and I'd say the first 1.5 miles is snow free, but there are a few streams running across and on the trail that have to be navigated, with some rock hopping. Old growth on the lower portions of the trail. The last .5 miles has up to about 7 or 8 feet of snow, but the way through the snow is clear, and we didn't need snowshoes. The lake itself still has a sheet of ice, but it is melting. We saw a few small avalanches up high, above the far end of the lake. We got to the trailhead early, and yet there were already three cars, and many more people were coming up as we headed down. I came away thinking next year I want to do this one earlier, with snowshoes. The lake and basin are beautiful.
