Fourth of July Cr Trail is a great option to attain Icicle Ridge. The trail is exposed (in the lacking shade sense) and depending on the time of year, there is no water after the second crossing of Fourth of July Cr. The trail is in great shape with only 5 downed trees to 5400'. Patchy snow begins at ~4600' but is melting very fast. There is a good flowing seasonal creek at ~4100'. We turned around at 5400' as we grew tired of post-holing. :) A great hike with great views! Cheers!

PS - My partner and I had an off leash barking dog take a run at us. This is an "on leash" hike and it makes me sad when my hike is affected by others selfishness. I never understand when a dog charges me or someone I know the response is always; "don't worry, he's friendly"...that's not very encouraging when you have been attacked in the past. Unleashed dogs intimidate other hikers, depriving them of the peace wilderness provides. By no means am I anti-dog, as I hiked with a German Shepherd for 10 years and did it responsibly. Please respect other hikers.

I understand how you feel about dogs off leash. This is an ongoing problem and I have been attacked twice. I now carry readily accessible spray and and stun baton. By doing this I also have to contend with a disgruntal dog owner if I feel I have to protect myself because they won't respond favorable if you do anything to their dog. Its bad when you have to worry more about the domestic animals then the wild animals but this will never end. I see on average half of all dogs off leash on ever hike I do so like me you have to decide whats best for you since so many dogs owners break the law.

one more to add with this annoying folks with their unleash dogs are their inability to pick-up dog POOP , many time we hike i step on those poop and just to realized it after im back in the car... by the way we also experience dog attack before , my wife been bitten by a cute little dog , the owner actually was holding her and as we pass by this cute little dog just jump on my wife and bit her in the arm, i feel like i want to kick that dog and the owner , but didnt do it due to my my son was around , maybe next time. am i a dog hater now? PLS DOg Owner put your DOG on leash and pickup poop after them...

Poop? Are you serious? Do you complain about deer, cougar/bear scat on trail? It's poop. Get over it. Read the book, Everyone Poops. As much as we would like to believe the philosophy take only pictures, leave only footprints is okay, it is those footprints that cause erosion and the general degradation on the trail and it's surroundings. A little biodegradable poop left on the trail is much less of an impact. First world problems must really be a pain in the arse.

So everyone else should have to step in dog poop because you are lazy and are breaking the law? Interesting. I'm guessing you leave your dogs poop on peoples yards when you walk your dog too right? Typical ignorant dog owner.

From this website. The least you can do is kick it to the side. The trail is a path for people to walk on, not a toilet for dogs. Thanks!

"Pick up or bury the poop. The only poop atop the forest floor should be from the animals who live there. Pack a trowel and bury the waste as you would your own, or better yet, pack it out in a plastic baggie."

Honestly POOP didnt really bother me i've work as a Nursing Assistant for more than 15 years and on daily basis we wipe ass with poop and client throw poop on us too sometimes, but the thing is all this POOP in the Nursing Home that i've work for is that we BAG sealed the POOP and discard them properly in the garbage, we clean everything that we see POOP in the room from bed railings to floor, in a nursing home u probably the GRUMPY OLD man/lady who would LOVE to DIG your ASS and wipe it in the railings of your BED ... have a nice hike ...

Try hiking earlier. I've been hiking for 3 years now and I've yet to run into that problem. I also did this hike a couple days before you went and didn't see any dogs. I start my hikes at 4:30AM-6:30AM before most people wake up. The drive and hike is a lot more peaceful. Just a suggestion! I know it doesn't work for everyone.

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
