The trail is in pretty good shape, which is to say winter flooding didn't rearrange things too badly this year. Be prepared to negotiate some large puddles and small slumping, sandy ravines, as well as some small blow downs and 100' of rock slide that's been there for a few years now and seems to be stable. Nothing too bad, but along the river it might be tough going for very young children.
The payoff for a little scrambling is the wildflowers in bloom now, nice views of the river canyon and a hike through history along what remains of the Everett & Monte Cristo Railway. The Lime Kiln trail and the hike into Monte Cristo also give glimpses into the E&MC RR's past.
At only 2 1/4 miles round trip and just a couple hundred feet elevation gain, this is also a nice "add on" if you finish early while hiking one of the many trails in the South Fork Stillaguamish valley.
