Snow on trail
The hike to the falls was nice and easy. Not hard to follow. Just a few muddy patches. No snow.

The follow on hike up to the summit is a different story. At .35 miles from the summit, you will get snow patches that are mixed with mud and tree needles making it rather slippery. Then you get into full on snow. Under the trees, it is VERY slippery. Traction devices are HIGHLY recommended. In the sunny areas, the snow is incredibly soft. I was post holing like crazy. Coming down on these sunny areas resulted in a little glissading. Self arrested with trekking pole.

The views from the summit were awesome. Be careful of the cornice. It is a long way down.

Dog Mountain (May 23)

Dog Mountain

South Cascades

Head to Dog Mountain for Columbia River Gorge views and an explosion of wildflowers. Eager to get in shape for summer? Head straight up the mountain on the northern side. Take the slow and steady eastern flank trail to stop and smell the flowers. (See if you can spot recent work by WTA trail crews.)
