- Why You Should Go Now
- Wildflowers blooming
- Be Aware Of
- Blowdowns
- Overgrown
- Mudholes
- Washouts
- Water on trail
- Snow on trail
As many recent trip reports have said, the road is closed about 2 miles from the original trailhead, making the trip closer to 9 miles rather than 5. After walking the road with 51 ditches from removal of culverts to cross(we counted), ranging from small to very large, arrive at the old trailhead. The trail from here on up is in desperate need of some TLC. Overgrown for the first half mile, numerous blowdowns along the entire length of the trail, muddy, rocky & rooty, a few spots where the trail has all but washed away... it is in MUCH worse shape than when I came here 2 years ago. Be ready for a difficult 9 miles.
That being said, the lakes are still gorgeous! There is still a bit of snow on the trail once you get close to the first lake, and a bit more on the trail to Big Greider Lake, but it's manageable and should melt in a week or two. A few wildflowers out, a good amount of fungus, saw a deer on the road in. A great day hike in spite of the extra effort due to its condition!
