Despite forecasts of lingering winter conditions at higher altitudes six of us set out to attempt reaching Lake of the Angels. Just above the stove line we encountered patchy snow and had to meander along to find the trail, we were obviously the only hikers up at this point in a long while, and perhaps the first of the season. Most of the trail to the climbing portions of the hike including the climbs were clear of snow. Directly after this point we hit heavy snow and lost the trail completely at the point where the trail is somewhat more flat, a meadow in the summer months. Perceiving that we were only halfway to the lake and unprepared for the steeper portion to come, we turned around. Throughout the hike water was obviously abundant with the runoff of melting snow. The weather was generally sunny, with slight precipitation and fog at the higher levels we didn't reach. A month to a month and a half are needed to make it to the lake more easily.

Putvin Trail

I was up the trail early last month but only made to where the trail intersects the old road. It appeared the bank on the far side of the road slid and you would have to crawl up the bank about 40 feet to reach the trail at the top. Is this true? There was about four feet of snow at the intersection when I was there. Thanks for your report.

Not Putvin

If you are referring explicitly to the Putvin trail than I have no idea, I took the other trail-head qtr mile up the main rd. As far as reaching the "junction" at the sign-in box, there is no slide at that point. No point in the trail is impassable. There is no snow until you get right above the stove line and it does not become a problem until you've passed the climbing portions.

Slide

I know of the area you are talking about. I looked up and thought the same at first. But just beyond the slide WNW is the trail to continue up. No more snow until just south of False Prophet. Good Luck!
