Why You Should Go Now
Wildflowers blooming
The Forest Service has now graded the Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road (FS #56), and while there are still some small, shallow potholes, any passenger car will be fine on this road. There were only 7 cars at the trailhead when we arrived about noon, though we saw many more cars parked at other trailheads (ie Mailbox Peak and the CCC Road). I don't know why this is a less popular hike--the trail is so well built and nicely maintained. The river is high and fast right now, and everything is so luch and green and wet, it felt very primeval. There is a little mud and a few blowdowns (nothing hard to get over or under) but really, the trail is in fine shape for spring. Quite a few woodland flowers were blooming.

Red Top Lookout

Snoqualmie Pass

Whether you're camping near Cle Elum or just want a prime picnic location for a short Saturday hike, you'll only have to climb a mile on this steep, easy-to-follow trail to get stunning views from a fire lookout (and cool alpine outhouse). It can be great for kids, but keep them close on the exposed summit.
